Synthesis of Forms
Sergei Eisenstein and Lev Kuleshov is The Soviet founders of montage theory. They understood the nature and mechanism of montage dialectically. Eisenstein relied on difference, and Kuleshov on similarity in the dialectical contradiction between successive frames. Sergei Eisenstein considered the conflict between frames to be the main thing in editing. It creates a new meaning, equal to the multiplication rather than the sum of meanings in individual frames. In the Kuleshov effect, new meaning appears due to the context that adjacent frames form for each other. In my project I explore the urban environment based on context. In diptychs I create composite and complex forms in which familiar city objects appear in new compositional and semantic relationships. I create a generalized image of the city by compressing space and time between objects in frames.
